Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration, also known as AMD and ARMD (for age related macular degeneration), is the most prevalent blindness-related eye disease in the world. Macular degeneration is essentially the breaking down of the macula, which is the light-sensitive part of the retina. The retina is responsible for the sharp and direct vision that we need for activities like reading and driving.

Types of Macular Degeneration

There are two types of Macular Degeneration: dry (atrophic) or wet (exudative).  The dry form of this disease is more common, however, the wet form of macular degeneration is more serious because it has a greater potential for vision loss. Macular Degeneration is most common for people over 65 years of age. While considered an eye disease related to aging, it can sometimes can occur as a genetic disorder or as a side effect to certain drugs.

Treatment Options for Macular Degeneration

There are several ways to treat macular degeneration, including supplemental vitamins, prescription medication, laser treatment, and low vision devices for the management of the disease if it has already progressed. If you or a family member is suffering from macular degeneration, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our eye doctors at Palmer Eye Institute so that we can help you get started on treating this disease and restoring your vision.
